Did you know?
Out of date smoke alarms can affect your insurance in case of a fire. Check your policy and check the manufacture date on your smoke alarms to ensure they were made after 2010.
How does this new legislation affect your property?
What is required in each dwelling?
In all dwellings smoke alarms must be:
- photoelectric (AS 3786-2014)
- not also contain an ionisation sensor
- less than 10 years old
- operate when tested
- interconnected with every other smoke alarm in the dwelling so all activate together
- either hardwired or powered by a non-removable 10-year battery
What smoke alarm brand should you use?
After removing hundreds of faulty smoke alarms in Townsville properties Mountain Man Electrical recommends Brooks.
The Brooks smoke alarms are made in Ireland and they last! You can guarantee you are paying for quality.
Here in the tropics, our prolific insect life can wreak havoc on electrical hardware. They damage smoke alarms and cause them to go off unnecessarily. This is an annoyance for tenants who often pull them out and render them useless in case of an emergency. We find Brooks survive longer than the rest because they are designed with insect mesh to deter little critters.
Why do I have to make these changes?
Risk of death in a house fire is reduced by more than half with properly installed and maintained smoke alarms.
We have better smoke alarm technology than ever before and more houses and infrastructure, so it makes sense that Queensland legislation is changing to make our homes the safest in Australia.
Landlords are obliged to upgrade the smoke alarm systems in their property/ies before 1 January 2022.
What is required on each storey?
Smoke alarms must be installed:
- in each bedroom
- in hallways which connect bedrooms and the rest of the dwelling or if there is no hallway, between the bedrooms and other parts of the storey
- if there are no bedrooms on a storey, at least one smoke alarm must be installed in the most likely path of travel to exit the dwelling.
