CASE STUDY · OFF-GRID · WOODSTOCK

Off-grid solar and battery for a property Ergon could not connect

The owner's block at Woodstock had no realistic way to connect to Ergon. We put 20kW of panels on the shed with a Sigenergy system running off-grid, a 30kW inverter and 48kWh of battery, set up for a generator once the house is built.

Electrician We're at Woodstock today. We're putting in an off-grid system for a customer who has got no chance of getting connected to Ergon.

Electrician We've got 20 kW of panels on the roof and a Sigenergy system running off-grid, with a 30 kW inverter and 48 kWh of battery.

Electrician When the customer builds a house here and starts living here, we'll be able to put a generator on this system, so there's never any loss of power, even if the batteries run out after some bad solar days.

Electrician We've installed Starlink at the same time. It's very good to have them connected to the internet, especially on remote sites, so that we can monitor them for the client if something goes wrong.

Electrician We'll have it all powered up in a couple of hours.

The job.

A block with no grid connection

A rural block with no chance of getting connected to Ergon, a shed already up, and a house to be built there later.

What we recommended

A Sigenergy system running off-grid, sized for the house to come, with the option to add a generator so there is never a loss of power, even if the batteries run down after some bad solar days. We also installed Starlink, so we can monitor the system for the owner and see if something goes wrong.

Is off-grid solar an option if connecting to Ergon is too expensive? ↗

What we did

  1. 1Installed 20kW of panels on the shed roof.
  2. 2Installed a Sigenergy system running off-grid, with a 30kW inverter and 48kWh of battery.
  3. 3Set the system up so a generator can be added when the house is built.
  4. 4Installed Starlink at the same time, so the system can be monitored remotely.
  5. 5Powered it up within a couple of hours of finishing.

QUESTIONS FROM THIS JOB

Running a home off the grid.

Answers from the Woodstock job, filmed 29 July 2026.

Can I go off-grid if Ergon cannot connect my block?

Yes. The Woodstock block had no chance of an Ergon connection, so we installed 20kW of panels, a 30kW inverter and 48kWh of Sigenergy battery to run it without the grid.

What happens after a run of cloudy days?

A generator can be added to the system, so it takes over if the batteries run low. At Woodstock the generator goes in when the owner builds the house.

How do you keep an eye on an off-grid system?

We installed Starlink at the same time, so the system is online and we can check it remotely for the owner if something goes wrong.

Building where Ergon is too expensive to connect?

Tell us about the block, what you plan to build and how you will use power. We will tell you whether off-grid makes sense for the site.
