QUESTION · SWITCHBOARDS

How do you know if your property pole needs replacing?

THE SHORT ANSWER

Check three things from the ground. Rust at the base of the pole, once you clear away any dirt. Rust on the meter box, or old ceramic fuses inside it. And the connections at the top of the pole, where tape or a makeshift repair on the mains is a warning sign. Any one of these needs a licensed electrician to look at it.

Three things to check on a property pole. 44 sec.

1. The base of the pole

Clear away any dirt or debris around the bottom of the pole and look for rust at ground level. A pole rusting out at the base is the first thing we check.

2. The meter box

Look for rust at the bottom or sides of the meter box. If it still has ceramic fuses inside, that is a replacement.

3. The top of the pole

Look at the connections at the top of the pole from the ground. Mains with tape on them, or a repair that looks makeshift, need attention. Do not climb up or touch the mains.

Why it matters now

Ergon Energy is replacing old electricity meters with smart meters between December 2025 and 2030. If the installer finds a major defect at the switchboard or meter box, they will not fit the new meter until it is fixed.

What to do if you see one

Electrical repairs in Queensland must be done by a licensed electrician. If you get a shock or a tingle from anything, call Ergon Energy on 13 16 70 at any hour, and do not touch the switchboard.
